Briar
BRIAR is a TRICOLOR TORTOISESHELL MAINE COON whose undercoat is mostly white with smokey black and ginger colors towards the tips. She has pale green eyes and silky fur. At 2 ½ years of age, she isn’t yet full grown at 14” tall at her back and 32” long including her tail. She is lean in stature and weighs 11.8 lbs. Briar is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations, FIV/FeLV negative, has her claws, and is microchipped.
Briar is true to her breed with tall ears with long tufts, a square jawline, and large body structure. She is rambunctious, especially at dawn and dusk when she is highly engaged with her hunt-catch-kill activities where toy balls, mice, and DaBird don’t stand a chance. She is a great playmate to a resident cat of the same age as they race through the house after each other.
Briar was surrendered by a lady who took her in from the person who purchased Briar from a breeder. The kind lady did everything possible to get Briar healthy, but her vet had no more solutions to offer. It seems Briar struggled with chronic URIs all her life until being treated by a vet through her SPCR foster home. Since stress is a contributor to recurring illness, the vet advised to limit the quantity of stressors in her new home.
Even though Briar likes her foster Mom as the primary caretaker, Briar has a noticeable attraction to men…not just her foster Dad (next to whom she takes naps on the sofa), but also to male visitors such as splaying herself across the counter in front of one. Briar is very endearing with a rumbling purr and her enthusiasm to knead the side of your body or a fleece throw.
While you may have always wanted a Maine Coon of your own, think again if you want a well-behaved cat that will follow rules. With her energy and leg stride, she can jump to any surface in a home and generally bat something off while she is there (4 broken ceramic items here so far). With her inquisitive nature, she jumps to the island and countertop repeatedly to find out if there is anything new to explore even though she now jumps down when we stand up. With her hunt-catch-kill instincts, she picks up items in her teeth and carries them away to be hidden in a cache such as behind the window blinds and sofas (toys, cheater glasses, pens, etc.).
Briar’s ideal home will have at least one other playful cat to help her burn energy. A home without dogs is preferred, but one that mainly ignores cats could be okay. The home must provide a water fountain and high-quality food as she is slow to gain weight. She eats some wet, but consistently wants some dry food. We’ve tried several brands and she eats Iams Immune Health the best so far. The humans in the home must have experience with an active breed of cat and be able to read cat body language. Briar is very sweet, but reaches out to grab your arm and hand when she wants petted and will sometime mouth your hand if she thinks you’re ignoring her. Because of this, a home without children under the age of 10 is preferred.
